Villa Calcinaia "Mammolo" 2018

100% Mammolo
A still red wine from the Chianti, Tuscany region of Italy.

Elegant & fruity. Raspberry & bay leaf.

Tasting Notes

Mammolo 2018 from Villa Calcinaia Estate has a beautiful ruby colour.

The nose is vivid, elegant and fruity. The bouquet has notes of red fruits like raspberries and cherries, there is a hint of bay leaf and a balsamic touch too.

On the mouth, Mammolo 2018 shows a rather high acidity. With it’s low soft tannins it is perfect to pair with charcuterie or stake tartare!

On the palate Mammolo is fruity and refreshing. Very easy drinking.

The finish is medium long.

Villa Calcinaia

This is another historical estate south of Florence and just north of Greve in Chianti. It dates back to the 16th century and to these days it is still owned and run by the same family.

Its long history doesn’t stand on the way of progress though. At Villa Calcinaia they embraced organic viticulture since the early 1990s. It’s more, with the help of the University of Florence they discovered and revived an unknown, lost grape variety, Occhiorosso.

They now produce a single variety wine not only with Occhiorosso but with other rare grape varieties too, like Mammolo and Sanforte. That is on top of their wide range of Chianti Classico bottles of course!

Mammolo

Varietal

Mammolo is an Italian red wine grape grown mainly in Tuscany. Mammolo was typically used in blended Sangiovese-based Chianti wines, where it contributed a distinct violet or mammole aroma. Its use has been decreasing. Mammolo can also be found in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano region of Tuscany and scattered vineyards throughout Central Italy, in addition to small plantings in the Chianti district.
